ZIS-42M

Produced 1942–1944. ZIS-42 main function was to trail heavy guns and provide transportation of various cargoes in areas without road. It shares front end and cabin with ZIS-5. In 1943 ZIS-5 engine was changed to ZIS-16 (95 hp)engine because the original engine didn’t have enough power.  Data here is based on original ZIS-5 engine.

In 1944 ZIS-43 prototype was built in GAZ factory. It had 37 mm anti aircraft gun fitted on ZIS-42 body.

ZIS-42 wasn’t as good as you might expect. It could only go through snow and swamps without problems. Also halftracks were very unreliable and engines were underpowered to move the tracks.  Thats probably why after that no more half-tracks were designed. Chekc out another halftrack GAZ-60 also.
