Introduced in 1939 but actually produced in 1940-1945.  GAZ-61 is replacement of too complex GAZ-M21. It was made by just putting GAZ-m2 body on a four wheel drive chassis. GAZ-61 was used by several famous Soviet generals. Only 238 units were produced.

First version was 5 seated 4 door convertible named GAZ-61 actually and it was produced between 1940 and 1941. In 1941 full metal body version GAZ-61-73 was introduced with the same engine but now the top speed was set as 107 km/h.

There is also pick-up version GAZ-61-415. Also small artillery trailer truck version was built named GAZ-61-417.
